Ski & Ride School

Lessons

From total first-timers to seasoned vets, Jay Peak’s Ski & Ride School will help you have the best days on snow. Jay is known for its phenomenal terrain; beautiful open glades, world-class tight trees, and chutes all blanketed in more snow than anywhere else on the East Coast. But it doesn’t stop there. Our specialized beginner areas, freestyle terrain parks, cruising blue runs, steep trails, and glade system with beginner to ultra-expert tree runs are sure to keep you busy.

WHAT Level am i at jay peak?

Skiing and riding is about having fun – and being safe while doing it. This guide will help you understand your skiing/snowboarding ability and what level to sign up for. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines to help us plan for who’s coming to the program. There is also an evaluation period on snow to help tighten up the group divisions.

First Time Lesson

  • Skiers and Riders - I've never skied or snowboarded before or it's been a long time and I'd like to start at the beginning. This lesson takes place on the first-time friendly moving carpet conveyor lift.

Moving Carpet Lesson

  • Skiers and RidersChoose this level if this is not your first time and you have yet to feel the exhilaration of successfully loading/unloading a chairlift OR of being able to easily control your speed and direction on beginner trails. The moving carpet is great for learning the ropes and refreshing your skills.

Beginner Lesson (Lower Mountain Chairlifts)

  • Skiers - I can turn left, right, and stop in a wedge on easy trails. I'm already successful riding chairlifts, turning, and stopping.
  • Riders -  I can turn both heel-side and toe-side, control speed, and stop. I'm already successful riding chairlifts, turning, and stopping.

*This level will get you to feel the satisfaction that comes with fine-tuning your skills and exploring all of our varied beginner trails.

Intermediate

  • Skiers - I make parallel turns on blue terrain and ski upper mountain trails.
  • Riders - I make heel-side and toe-side turns down blue and easier black terrain. I’m confident riding some upper-mountain trails.

Advanced

  • Skiers - I have skied at Jay Peak and can make parallel turns on all black terrain/glades.
  • Riders - I have ridden at Jay Peak exploring black terrain, glades, and park.

*For the safety of you or your child, please do not rank as an Advanced skier/rider if you have never been on Jay Peak terrain. Keep in mind that 1% of our traveling guests ski and ride at this level.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

LIFT PASS

A lift ticket is required to access any Jay Peak terrain, including our 300ft moving carpet, even in a lesson. Don't have a Ski & Stay lodging package? You can purchase at check-in.

EQUIPMENT

We have Burton, Elan, and Rossignol equipment specifically designed to make the experience easy and fun for beginners and beyond. Children (ages 4-12) enrolled in our kid's program can be outfitted with gear when dropped off for their lesson at a discounted price of just $30/day. Beginners ages 13+ may be interested in our Beginner Packages and anyone else can grab gear from the main Rental Shop on the Stateside base.

CLOTHING

Dress in layers so you will be prepared for changing weather conditions. Jay Peak is known for its snow, cold temps, and wind, so bring a backpack or bag if you’re bringing extra clothes for your child. Labeling everything with the child’s name is always a great idea as well.
