Jay Peak Resort Champions Sustainability with Innovative Energy Projects
JAY PEAK, Vt. – [Feb. 15, 2025] – As the ski industry grapples with the pressing challenges of climate change, Jay Peak Resort officials reaffirm the ski area’s commitment to sustainability through cutting-edge energy efficiency projects. Under the guidance of Director of Mountain and Base Area Operations Andy Stenger, two significant projects were completed in the last 18 months that reduce carbon emissions and inspire change across the industry.
The first of these projects involved the installation of three large water-to-water heat pumps, which repurpose rejected heat from the main heating system to efficiently warm the resort’s indoor water park features and pool. This system significantly lowers the resort's propane consumption, lowers the resort's carbon footprint, and enhances guest comfort while contributing to overall sustainability goals.
Additionally, Jay Peak has introduced a hybrid boiler system that serves as an alternate heat source for the hotel and indoor water park. The newly installed 3 megawatt electric boiler operates alongside existing propane boilers, allowing for a flexible approach to heating the Hotel Jay and Pump house indoor water park. When there is excess electricity on the local power grid the electric boiler will run helping a constrained electrical grid. Doing this allows more renewable electricity sources to get to the homes of Vermonters. This strategy not only provides cleaner, more affordable heat but also helps alleviate pressure on the local electric grid.
This new Hybrid Boiler has been in operation for a little over 12 months, delivering notable environmental and cost-saving impacts. Over this period, the system has offset approximately 250,000 gallons of propane, which is equivalent to replacing a fully loaded propane delivery truck every 4–5 days during the peak winter heating season. It has resulted in approximately $150,000 in savings for the resort and offset around 1,450 tons of CO₂ emissions.
By reducing utility costs and environmental impact, the resort aims to lead the charge in dedication to sustainability and energy efficiency throughout the ski industry. As Jay Peak Resort continues to explore innovative solutions and sustainable practices, it remains committed to making a positive impact on the environment and inspiring others in the industry to follow suit.
