#1 U.S. Ranked FlowRider Champion Monica Caffrey to Teach at New Summer Surf Lesson Series at Jay Peak Resort
Lessons Culminate with the First Annual FlowRider Competition, The Drop In, in August
JAY PEAK, Vt. – [June 30, 2025] – Raised Jay FlowRider Champion Monica Caffrey, ranked number one in the United States, will “drop in” to teach simulated surf lessons during Jay Peak Resort’s new Summer Surf Lesson Series. The series is an eight-week instructional program designed to introduce riders of all skill levels to the Double Barrel FlowRider, Vermont’s only indoor surf simulator located at Jay Peak’s Pump House Indoor Waterpark.
“I basically grew up on this wave,” said Caffrey, a Jay local who first tried the FlowRider at the resort in 2011. “Back then, I’d ride whenever I could—using half-off coupons, waiting in line for hours. Eventually I got a job here, and when Jay started giving me dedicated training time, that’s when things really changed. Without this mountain, without this wave, I wouldn’t be competing at all.”
She added, “Jay Peak’s support—giving me consistent training time on the wave—completely changed my trajectory. That’s the reason I’m ranked number two in the world and number one in the country today. If the Double Barrel didn’t exist, my life would look entirely different.”
The Double Barrel FlowRider is an indoor surf simulator that creates a continuous, sheet wave by pumping water at high speed over a soft, padded surface—essentially letting riders surf without an ocean. It's called the "Double" Barrel because it can be used by two riders at once. Beginners can start by boogie boarding while more advanced riders can try stand-up flowboarding, which feels like a hybrid of surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding. It’s fast-moving but forgiving, designed for quick learning and even quicker wipeouts. The ride delivers nonstop action in a controlled, all-weather setting.
The lesson series, which runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 24 through August 14, includes eight one-hour lessons and small group sessions led by a team of pro and semi-pro instructor/riders, including Caffrey who will be at select lessons. Lessons are offered at either 10:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m., giving participants the option to choose their preferred time slot. Each session includes waterpark access during the lesson.
Lessons culminate with the First Annual Double Barrel FlowRider Competition: The Drop In, on Saturday, Aug. 16. from 3:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. inside the Pump House Indoor Waterpark. The event is open to participants of all ages and abilities and is free for those enrolled in the Summer Surf Series. Competition entry for all others is $40 and includes a full-day waterpark admission for that day. There will be divisions for kids, teens, and adults, prizes, giveaways, and podium awards. Spectator access is free and open to the public.
Caffrey, who also is ranked #2 globally and will be at The Drop In, emphasized the importance of lowering the barrier to entry for aspiring riders. “I didn’t have access to something like these lessons when I was starting out,” she said. “Even when I worked here as a lifeguard, I had people from all over—girls from other states and even other countries—asking for tips or lessons. One of them went on to win a national title. Programs like this matter.”
She also noted how vital it is to keep the sport fun and accessible: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help or tips, and don’t let yourself get frustrated—because that’s how you lose the love of it. You need the hard days to really appreciate the good ones.”
