Unemployment Changes

Many of you may have seen the most recent announcement from the Department of Labor regarding fraudulent activity, and their response to heighten security and parameters surrounding claims. We wanted to touch base, as this news continues to unfold, with regard to how it may affect those of you filing for unemployment this summer.

ONLINE APPLICATIONS TEMPORARILY DISABLED

Due to an increase in fraudulent activity, the Department of Labor has temporarily suspended the online claimant portal. All claimants will need to contact the Claimant Assistance Line at 1-877-214-3330 for the time being. This line is open Monday-Saturday from 8am to 5:30pm.

WORK SEARCH REQUIREMENTS REINSTATED (Press Release)

The requirement to search for work when experiencing a lay-off (seasonal or furlough) will be reinstated starting May 9th, 2021. In order to remain eligible to receive UI benefits, you will be required to search for work and be able and available to accept work that is offered to you. Each week, claimants must completed qualified job contacts and report those on your weekly claims. Please see below for how this may affect you personally.

  • If you have received a Return to Work date from your manager that is 10 weeks or less:
    • You do not have to perform a work search.
  • If you have received a Return to Work date from your manager that is more than 10 weeks:
    • You will need to submit proof of conducting three (3) job contacts (or activities) each week while collecting benefits, starting May 9th.
  • If you are working part-time (between 1 and 34 hours), and have a full-time Return to Work date from your manager that is more than 10 weeks:
    • You will need to submit proof of conducting one (1) job contact (or activity) each week while collecting benefits, starting May 9th.
  • If you are working part-time (between 1 and 34 hours), and have a full-time Return to Work date from your manager that is 10 weeks or less:
    • You do not have to perform a work search.
  • If I’m required to perform a work search, does it have to be for a comparable job? (Example: You are in a managerial position and offered a front-line position elsewhere.)
    • No, it is the expectation of the Department of Labor that you will accept any reasonable position.

If you are offered a job via a job contact, please reach out to your manager to discuss these details before accepting. We value our team beyond measure and want to be sure we do what we can to have you returning to work with us as soon as possible.

Continue to check back at the UI Claimant Work Search page for any updates regarding these new requirements.

CLAIM DELAYS

The Department of Labor has reinstated a 10-day hold on all new claims to allow them time to collect necessary information from employers. This means there will be a delay in receiving your first payment, not that your first week will be unpaid. Please continue to file your claims weekly while you await this holding period.

ADDITIONAL REMINDERS

  • The additional $300 of unemployment benefits is set to expire the week ending 09/04/2021.
  • When opening or re-opening your claim, you may state that you are unemployed as a result of Covid-19.
  • Information is available, as it unfolds, via The Boot Room and labor.vermont.gov.
  • Unemployment fraud has increased during Covid-19. Please read this press release on how to keep your information protected.

We understand that the unemployment claims process has been a challenging and confusing one for all. We are committed to providing you as much information as we can to help aid you during this time. As always, please reach out to the HR team at hr@jaypeakresort.com with any questions or concerns.

Please note: information from the Department of Labor is changing very quickly. We will be sure to send through additional updates as they are released.
