Hiking

Hiking the mountain will give you a whole new perspective on getting to the top (or exploring closer to the base) under your own steam. We have hikes ranging from easy and family-friendly to challenging but still family-friendly.

Hike Smart

The orange numbers on this map show intersections on the hiking trails, the same numbered intersections are on posts on the mountain. In most cases the hiking trails are loops, so at an intersection, you can choose to continue onward or you can loop back to where you started.

The green, blue and black colors of the paths represent easy, moderate, and most difficult paths. There are colored markers at intervals on the trails to show that you are on the right path. Do not leave the marked paths.
Plan your day according to your group’s hiking ability. Some sections of the trail are rocky and rugged and there are numerous water bar crossings.

Wear good hiking shoes, take sunscreen and plenty of drinking water and be aware that weather conditions can change rapidly on the mountain. BE PREPARED!

Jay Peak does not have rescue services on staff in the summer and fall. There is good cell phone coverage almost everywhere, so if you have an emergency, DIAL 911 and tell the operator the number of the trail intersection you are above or below or nearest to. Keep this map handy.

Occasionally there will be off-road vehicles traveling on the walking paths, some but not all are Jay Peak staff. Watch for vehicles and stay clear.
